Welcome Message from the Headteacher, Samantha Campbell
Welcome to the Harrogate Pupil Referral Service website, formerly Harrogate PRU.
The Centre was opened in September 2000 and joined forces with the area's REOTAS provsion on 1st September 2008. The Pupil Referral Service (PRS) now educates pupils aged between 11 and 16 from schools across the Harrogate and Selby districts. We take pupils from approximately 16 secondary schools and work collaboratively with 11 local 'Harrogate' secondary schools with whom we share a strong working relationship. The Service caters for pupils who display challenging behaviours and are, therefore, at risk of exclusion or who have been permanently excluded, school phobics and those pupils who need an alternative education because of a medical need. We also work closely with Looked After Pupils, Travellers and those youngsters known to the YJS. Additionally, we work alongside primary schools to support their youngsters in a range of ways.
Our aim is to provide all students with an appropriate and considered range of opportunities in order for them to gain personal fulfilment through learning. Taking into account the wider social and emotional needs of each student, all staff endeavour to transform students’ motivation and develop the whole child spiritually, emotionally and intellectually. We aim to provide students with a range of opportunities which allow them to experience achievement thus enabling the majority to make a successful return to mainstream education or enter into continued education and/or employment.
Working in partnership with schools, parents, carers and the wider community we aim to promote the educational and social inclusion of our students. Through the delivery of a broad and balanced curriculum, we strive to maximise each student's potential for further learning in addition to the development of employment skills. Interaction with others, participation and teamwork are strongly encouraged and opportunities are delivered through a range of approaches. In addition to building on a student’s prior achievement, we manage behaviour consistently in a safe, supportive and stimulating environment. We fully endorse the outcomes of the Government’s ‘Every Child Matters’ initiative, ensuring that, as far as possible, our pupils: Be Healthy, Stay Safe, Enjoy and Achieve, Make a Positive Contribution and Achieve Economic Well-being. Staff work closely with students across the Key Stages to help them develop strategies to cope with conflict, anger, stress and anxiety and demonstrate the importance of acceptable and appropriate behaviour.
We believe that our Service should support our students and prepare them for the future by providing a framework of the core values, skills and knowledge that they will need to grow both socially and individually. Through the endorsement of autonomous learning and inclusive practice, we will strive to help our students develop into mature, successful young adults.
The PRS has the Basic Skills Quality Mark (Round 3), the National Healthy Schools' Standard and was recently awarded the prestigious quality standards mark for Careers Education and Guidance. In September 2008, the PRS was regarded as being Highly Inclusive and achieved the top Level 5 grade in the Inclusion Quality Mark.
In April 2007 and, more recently, in 2010 the Centre received the accolade of being judged 'Outstanding' in all aspects as observed by the OfSTED Inspectors - achievements that we are truly proud of.
We are proud to be able to share with you the achievements and successes of our pupils so please take the time to look through our website.
